In May 1780 the British finally captured Charlestown, including Fort Moultrie, finally evacuating the city in December 1782 as the Revolution entered its final year. Little known to most people is the fact that in 1942 shipping along both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts were under intense German U-boat attacks. A control tower and underground bunker were installed, and these were the backbone of the Harbor Entrance Control Post and the Harbor Entrance Command Post. For those unaware Fort Moultrie started as a Revolutionary War fort, then was re built before the Civil War, retooled for the Spanish-American war, and then only unmanned after WWII.
