I also really LOVE Baxter State Park. I think the decision to close Baxter is not really about “closing the wilderness” or doubting people’s ability to socially distance while using the park. So, this decision feels like a bummer and I also think it is understandable. Individuals and groups of all ages are welcomed, and it is important to Park staff that the volunteer experience is mutually positive. Baxter has no stores, no electricity, no running water, no flush toilets, no trash cans, no gas pumps, and only takes cash. Learn why this landscape deserves such lifelong devotion. Baxter State Park has been controlling access to the area for the last 25 years by limiting the parking spaces, and overnight campsites (which they did on the day of Jurek’s hike as well), but this strategy hasn’t been effective for limiting the number long-distance AT hikers that are walking into the park, sometimes more than 15 miles, to reach the summit of Katahdin. Founded in 2000, Friends has grown over the past nineteen years into a vibrant organization and a trusted partner for Baxter State Park. The park offers plenty to do and great camping, some camp grounds better than others, depending on what you would want to do.
