The White House and Museum of the Confederacy offer visitors two unique experiences involving Civil War history. In the coming months, its collection of artifacts will be moved from the concrete, 1970s museum building downtown to a new pavilion under construction at the Civil War Center on Richmond’s riverfront at the remains of the historic Tredegar Ironworks, which made Confederate cannon, armor plating and other ordnance during the war. The American Civil War began in 1861, lasted until 1865, and was ruinous by any standard. Three floors of exhibits and artifacts are on display. In Richmond, Va., a new museum will give a more inclusive and expansive view of the Civil War –– telling the history and stories of women, African Americans, Native Americans and more.
