The Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association (CBRA) is an association of Canada’s 18 Canadian biosphere regions.Over 2.3 Million Canadians live in UNESCO designated biosphere regions, and many of these residents develop and promote innovative approaches to conservation and economic development.
Just 40 kilometres from Cape Town, the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is South Africa’s oldest biosphere reserve, and was first designated in 1998. Yangambi, in the fertile Congo River Basin, has 32,000 species of trees and such endemic species as forest elephants and red river hogs. What is a Biosphere Region? The Niger component of the ‘W’ complex was designated a biosphere reserve in 1996. The previous biosphere reserves are now the core areas of today’s reserves. Tsá Túé is located in the Sahtú region of the Northwest Territories of Canada surrounding the Great Bear Lake watershed and the community of Délı̨nę. Each reserve is governed by the country in which it resides, which allows each country or state to use the area for the region’s specific needs, making sure that every reserve is used wisely and for the benefit of the communities around it. We are striving to be designated under the UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Man and the Biosphere program. The Rhön is called the "land of open distances" because the peaks of its mountain plateaus offer a largely unwooded cultural landscape with a magnificent view across the country. Biosphere Reserves are regions of global ecological significance, that make an on-going commitment to the United Nations to strive for sustainability. The majority of its 103,629 hectares is comprised of mountainous landscapes including high peals and deep valleys, but also includes coastal plains and 1,629 hectares of marine area. They are learning areas for sustainable development under diverse ecological, social and economic contexts, touching the lives of more than 250 million people.
