Know that the 250 Savage is well regarded (as is the 30/06) by those in the know on the Campfire. All the major manufactures have at least one premium grade case within the .308 Winchester family. This allows the .257 to efficiently handle bullets heavier than 100 grains.

The little .25 [250-3000] father of the .22-250 would make a fine reduced capacity 1/4 bore varminter. As it turned out, the .257 Roberts was chosen because I had obtained a rifle about a year earlier.

The old Savage 99 was the last rifle chambered for this caliber and sadly the excellent 99 is no longer being made. The .250-3000 Savage was designed for the Savage Model 99 lever action rifle by designer Charles Newton in 1915. It is a great, low recoil, smooth option. All you need to do is take a Mauser and rebarrel it and you have a correctly feeding 257 roberts. Overall the 250 Savage was slightly superior because of its ability to use 117 gr.

The lure of the .30 caliber has overshadowed the .25, and only the .25-35 Winchester, .250 Savage and .257 Roberts have reached and maintained a level of popularity over a duration of time.
As far as factory ammunition goes, the definite edge goes to the .257 Roberts, as there are more choices than there are for the .250-3000. Even the lighter pills don't compare to the 257 Roberts.

It's parent case is the 250 Savage (250-3000 Savage). The .257 Roberts has the advantage of greater case capacity and greater overall length over the fine little .250 Savage.

In fact no one is chambering a commercially available .250-3000 Savage anymore. That said, the .250 Savage does of course duplicate the performance of the .243 and .257 when the latter are used at longer ranges. Or you can resize (maybe have to first neck up) and trim any case within the .308 Winchester family.

It is a great, low recoil, smooth option. I'm a quarter bore fanboy.

The original factory load for this is very similar to the .250-3000 Savage. The .257's advantage over the similar .24 caliber cartridges is its ability to handle heavier bullets, and the .257 Roberts is factory loaded with 117-120 grain bullets. The .250-3000 Savage is better known as the .250 Savage and was an original design from a rimless bottleneck .258 inch (6.6mm) large rifle cartridge.

257 Roberts is a sweet round, very much overlooked. Today’s gunfight pits a couple of smallish deer calibers against each other in a pair of bolt-action deer rifles. This makes the Roberts a very good deer size game cartridge with low very tolerable recoil.

Pictured is Paul Box’s custom 250 Savage. The second load used a “case full” of IMR 4350 behind an unspecified 90-grain JSP bullet. Had a bunch of them between .250 Savage to .25-06. Donaldson used several .257 Roberts rifles with different twist barrels and different throat lengths.

It’s built on a Savage Model 14 and features a squared and trued action. Donaldson knew all of the actors involved in the development of the .257 Roberts.

Federal , Hornady , Norma and Nosler all offer loaded ammunition (and much of it in the +P configuration), whereas I can find only loads from Hornady and Remington for the .250-3000 Savage, without looking to the boutique shops. Still have two .25-06s.
